Gym Consistency | Blog #4

I’ve struggled this year when it comes to consistency with working out.

A lot…

I have my excuses, obviously.

The lies I tell myself.

The “outs” I give myself.

“It’s been a long day”, “You have more work to do”, “You aren’t feeling 100%”, and the worst one: “You can do it tomorrow”.

It started last July (2025), I was working with a coach (Abbie) to help me towards my goal of completely a Hyrox Singles Race in sub 70-minutes.

I was obsessed with Hyrox, it was the second time in my fitness career that I’d dedicated a training program to it.

She was awesome with helping me and having a coach for this stage was definitely the right call.

I was sceptical, but she was starting out and being a year into my own business, I wanted to support someone starting out on their own!

We made great progress with my running especially, that was always a weakness of mine - my speed.

My endurance was good, and I completed an ultra-marathon the year before, but it wasn’t particularly quick.

In a Hyrox, the runs are the most intense part for me, and in my training I struggled to maintain my breathing rhythm on one of the workouts after my run.

But, Abbie made a great program that helped me develop this and I made some great progress, as I said.

Unfortunately, I got an injury about 10 weeks into the 20 week program with my knee.

It was an existing injury and flair up of “osgood-schlatter” disease, which prevented me from doing P.E. in school and ended my career in Basketball (definitely not because I’m short, it was because of my knee…)

I went to physio and did my excercises, but not being able to workout the way I wanted meant I lacked all motivation.

Instead of being pragmatic about it, of still doing my “upper body” days, or altering my training to accommodate my knee, I used it as an excuse that I couldn’t do anything…

For the year since, I’ve had some very up and down periods in business, and either way I used those phases as an excuse to not workout.

If it was going well, I wanted to do more work or I was too tired from the work I was doing.

If it wasn’t going well, I didn’t want to work out, I wanted to try improve the business, or just lock myself away and sulk…

But, I need to be honest with myself about the reasons I’m not working out.

I need to be honest with myself about my actual priorities in my life and the man I want to become.

Time is ticking and I’m meant to be in my most energetic and healthy stage of my life but I’ve been looking at any reason to push the workout to another day, that ultimately doesn’t come round.

A couple days ago I heard a quote on a podcast with Naval Ravikant, that “Self Esteem is the reputation you have with yourself”…

It struck a chord and felt like a personal attack.

My self-image hasn’t been good over the past few months.

But it’s no wonder when I know what I let slip under the radar.

Yes, business may be going well.

But I know the things I do and tell myself about being “healthy”, what I do and what I eat.

That needs to change.

And ACTUALLY change….

Not sure if this is a blog post or a diary entry, but we are sticking with the theme of making myself uncomfortable
